Office Live solution platform and developer resources launched

Hey folks,

The wait is finally over.  The new version of Office Live is the first release that we are encouraging developers to use as a solution platform.  You can create your own custom business applications or workspaces, or start from one of our existing applications and extend them for your customers’ requirements.

There are lots of powerful new tools that you can use when building your apps, including:

  • Galleries full of application templates
  • Data Sharing to link your public-facing Web site to your workspaces and business applications
  • New Web parts such as the List Rollup Web part to aggregate data of similar types from across your applications
  • Powerful integration with Microsoft Office 2007 and 2003
  • Workflow rules (requires SharePoint Designer 2007)
  • Use of the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Web Services

To help you, we have several new resources available:

  • Office Live Developer Guide – we’ve updated the preview version and now made it available in the MSDN Library. It is full of interesting how-to articles, schemas, and information on what is and is not supported from the underlying Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 platform.  Highly recommended!!!
  • Developer Forums – to accompany the platform, we’ve created a new forum/newsgroup on MSDN where you can start discussions on technical topics and problems, and chime in with your suggestions.
  • Developer Video Testimonials – hear a little bit from some of our pilot partners who we can’t thank enough for helping us test the concept (and test the code!) for this new version of Office Live.
  • Office Live Developer Center – tying everything together is the freshly updated Developer Center.  This site has links to our developer resources as well as other technologies that we think might help you get started on Office Live.

I’ve been talking up the platform here on this blog since last spring, and we can’t wait to see what you do with it.  Please remember to use our developer forums to send us your feedback on the solution platform and developer resources.

 Thanks,

Chris Beiter, Program Manager

The Force Is Not With Us!
It does not make sense that the OL Boards are closed without any announcement.  There needs to be improved communications.  Also, those of us beta users should be able to opt-out and re-do our websites so we can move to the new version ASAP.  I've been hearing from users about a search box in the header.  Forcing us to have a search box that is useless for most websites is not a positive for Office Live.

This is a response from me to the boards.  As far as the one account, one website rule: you have to realize that even people like myself with money can have only one credit card on purpose.

I love the "posibilities" I can envision with Office Live for many website builders.  However, I don't see the Microsoft team having the same big vision that will draw large crowds.  This is not a great start for OL.  It can be salvaged.  I think highly of the team - but they need the outside eyes to see the big picture.

Not that I expect an answer but it would be helpful to know if the boards are down temporarily or are you guys closing up shop? There are a lot of us who are developing into an actual user's community (a good thing for OL). At least, leave a message in the "Announcements" area of the board for new users.

    Thanks,

  • Potential & Opportunity
    November 27 7:10 AM
I see GREAT potential here!!!!  But there are numerous problems, lack of good support, lack of integration with other products, lack of communicated vision, lack of business capabilities, lack of marketing to gain more customers, etc, etc, etc.  The rush to move off of beta in the USA was premature.  The conversion process from beta (if there really is one) is unprofessional.  This team really needs the help of a consultant...like me.  I'm not just saying this because that has been my occupation for decades.  I'm saying this because I see great promise and opportunity for Microsoft and it's customers.  However, I think Microsoft is blowing this opportunity.  There is no blame, this team has lots of talent.  It needs a professional with an outside pair of eye balls.  I contributed tons on the boards - they are down from adding input today.  So, what are you waiting for?  Contact me and move this thing into high gear!!!  RG - RGLetter

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello,

I can't get into my email account. It controls access to my website. The account I signed in with is not the original or default email account. I have tried support but they keep saying the same thing-request information and then send me to the change your password page. I have tried to change my password but that doesn't get me anywhere since I cannot get into my email. This has been going on for two weeks. Maybe you can suggest something?
