How to setup Windows Mobile devices to connect to Office Live mailboxes

Over time we've had lots of questions on getting Office Live mail from a mobile device.  While we don't have 'native' Blackberry or 'push style' support today we do have the ability to use Windows Mobile devices with our mailboxes.  Below are some instructions we have been working on with customers to make this simple for everyone to do.  Please try this out if you are interested in reading your mail from a Windows Mobile device.  And, if you find steps which are confusing, missing, or incorrect please let us know!  Thanks!

And, since it's typically the first question asked:  We have not announced a timeline for supporting a 'push style' or Blackberry interface for our email system.  Rest assured that once we have a feature timeline to announce you will read about it both here on and on our community site.

Here are the instructions:

  • Office Live email can be accessed on Windows Mobile devices. The configuration is the same as Hotmail account, but the domain will be Office Live subscription domain.
  • This method of checking your mail does require internet access.  We assume here that your device is connected to the internet through either wireless network or cradle.
  • On Windows Mobile devices, both pocket Outlook and browser can be used to check and manage Office Live email.
  • Both Office Live Basics and Essentials accounts are supported.
  • The screenshots below are for Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone using Office Live Basics account.
  • Link to Windows Mobile help topic on this space is here.

Configure Office Live email for Pocket MSN:

2. Click on More

3. Start Pocket MSN

4. Select “MSN Hotmail”

5. Type in your Office Live email address and password. You can check ‘Save password’ if you want to keep it for future email operations

6. Select Menu->Send/Receive to sync your email folders and emails from your Office Live mailbox to your Windows Mobile device

7. Now you will see all email in Pocket Outlook and can setup frequent ‘Send/Receive’ intervals from your Device
